The spread of the iPhone and other smartphones with high-quality cameras has hurt the inexpensive point-and-shoot camera market. But there are still many people who want a dedicated camera. The major advantages of a separate real camera is high-quality and fast zoom lens, which really helps when you can’t get very close to your subject. And also the ability to easily transfer photos off an SD or other memory card, or to swap memory cards, is far easier than fooling with a smartphone.
One of the toughest things about evaluating cameras is that models are constantly changing, and good customer reviews are hard to come by. So whereas things you use that stay the same, like dog food, are around a long time, camera models are improving. The best digital camera under 200 you can find today may not be around tomorrow.
The best digital camera under 200 has the advantage of ease of use (perfect for family members who don’t like high-tech gadgets). And the low cost means if you have a problem or it is lost, it is not as painful. This makes them great best digital camera under 200 choices for the family.

This great camera has the highest number of positive customer reviews on Amazon, and comes with a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KC6NAK4″ locale=”US” tag=”best-reviews-guru-20″]great optional accessory pack[/easyazon_link]. I had a Nikon a few years ago something like this and really liked it.
The body is larger than most of the other point and shoot cameras below, which allow it to have features similar to a low-end DLSR. It is a very good choice as one of the best point and shoot cameras under 200. Features:
- This is a certified refurbished, but there are several variations you can look at in different colors if you< click this link./li>
- 16 megapixels
- 1920 x 1080 movies (.MOV)
- Battery life 390 pictures (4 x AA batteries)
- 34x zoom
- Off to first shot time is 1.2 seconds, 0.1-0.3 time from press to shot, time betweens about 0.7 seconds, 1.5 seconds with flash.
- 4.5 out of 5 rating on Amazon with well over 2,000 reviews in various colors and packages (as of 9/10/15)
- Great value starting at $179 (as o 9/10/2015)
This is a very impressive camera! There are one “con” to this camera, but honestly, under $200, it is acceptable. This is an old version of the camera line, but is still definitely available and has much better reviews than it’s successor, the 840.

If you are interested in seeing descriptions of a wide variety of digital cameras so you can compare features across models, there is a good article in PCMag.
If you’re looking for the best digital camera under 200, it’s primarily an issue of separating out the good ones from the not-so good ones. This can be done by analyzing the ratings and reviews on Amazon. However, this can take hours.
We do that for you. Our ratings and reviews are based on the satisfactions ratings of the Amazon customers. We also take into consideration the reliability of the manufacturer of the camera, the features, price and number of reviews.
Camera makers have make near-identical versions some of which work well and some of which do not. Especially in the cameras under 200. What this means is that if you look hard, you can find a past version that is not only cheaper than the current model. In fact, it can be better than the current model.
For example, for most people Canon’s Digic image processing software was better in version 4 than version 5. And we have taken that into consideration in our reviews.
So a digital camera under 200 that used to be $300 but has remained popular is going to be a better deal than the brand new unproven model that comes out of the gate at $200. However, as technology changes, there may be times where you need the new camera.
Or, for instance, if you absolutely have to have 1080 HD videos, a camera under 200 with 720 HD videos is not going to do it for you. This is one of the features that varies in cameras under 200.
As for specifications, you have to decide which features you understand, and which are important to you for the best digital camera under 200. How much zoom? How big an aperature (and therefore how well does it do in low light)? Does it have wifi and is it any good? Does it start up fast? How many of these features you get is what makes a $200 digital camera different from a $2,000 digital camera.
We literally spend hours, 20-40 hours for any article like this for best digital camera under 200, analyzing the different cameras and reviews to come up with our selections. We only included cameras with optical image stabilization. We eliminated cameras with few or poor reviews and ratings on Amazon.
[click_top][click_and_image c_image =’https://bestreviews.guru/wp-content/gallery/best-digital-camera-under-200/canon-powershot-elph-530-HS-best-digital-camera-under-200.jpg’ c_asin=’B00VH16ONS’ c_alt=’picture of nikon COOLPIX L830 as best digital camera under 200′ c_alt_b=’best digital camera under 200 picture of nikon COOLPIX L830′ c_desc=”Canon PowerShot 350 HS”]There are some other “expert” reviewers of best digital camera under 200 who pick the Canon PowerShot 350 HS (silver or black) as a great choice for best digital camera under 200. The 350 HS does appear to have some great features — for example:
- 20.2 Effective megapixels, with 16 total choices of resolution
- 1920 x 1080 movies, total of 3 resolutions (.MP4)
- 12x zoom + 4zx digital zoom
- Auto focus: Contrast Detection; Face Detect AiAF, Single AF point (center or face select and track)
- 3200 max ISO
- 16+ creative exposure modes such as self time, black-and-white, poster effect, etc.
But if you dig a little deeper, you will find that the this camera does not have a very good customer reviews rating on Amazon, and in fact does not have many customer reviews at all. It only has a 3.4 rating on Amazon, which is low. with very few reviews, 21 as far as this reviewer can see. Complaints:
- Light and flimsy body casing
- Pictures grainy
- Short battery life (one report of only 50 pictures)
- Wifi usage difficult
So time will tell if the ELPH Canon 350 HS can measure up as the best digital camera under 200.
Now, of course, this may be due to the fact that it is a fairly new model. Though low-end Canon cameras have been very popular historically, Canon does not have a consistent record in the best point and shoot camera under 200 category.

Best Digital Camera Under 200 – Best Reviews Guru
I bought the Nikon COOLPIX L830 camera for outdoor photography. The 34x optical zoom is remarkable in such a small package. I’m using it for video as well as still shots, and the optics are great for both. Some other nice features are that the camera is very light, starts up quickly, and has a display that can be seen in bright sunlight. The default options turn on a lot of ‘photoshop’ type processing, so I found that I needed to make some selections to just get raw high resolution images as the default output.
I bought the Nikon COOLPIX L830 Digital Camera for my wife and she absolutely loves it!! Was debating on a bunch of different options but ended up buying this one on a whim instead and it turned out great. Hell of a zoom too.
